In its press release about the Span Smart Panel, GMP, which is the largest utility in Vermont, said it would enroll 100 customers in a pilot program to test the panel’s electrical load management and metering capabilities, as well as to integrate the device with distributed energy resources, such as solar panels, batteries and electric vehicle chargers. In a blog for Forbes, Mark Vena, a senior analyst with Moor Insights & Strategy, wrote that although “ … we’re a long way from intelligent, sustainable homes becoming the rule rather than the exception …” the cost difference between “ … a legacy home and a sustainable home is shrinking, eliminating one of the fundamental stumbling blocks for most consumers.” But they seem likely to become more widely adopted as smart homes become more prevalent and distributed energy resources such as solar panels, batteries and electric vehicles grow more popular with consumers. Smart electrical panels and technology that adds intelligence to traditional electrical panels are still on the cutting edge. The other, Leviton Manufacturing Company, is an electrical wiring maker founded in 1906, which still makes it 70 years younger than Schneider.

One is Lumin, which like Span, is a startup founded by its CEO - in its case, Alex Bazhinov, who launched it in 2016. Meanwhile, at least two companies are marketing technology that gives smart capabilities to traditional circuit breaker boxes. Schneider Electric, the venerable French energy management and industrial automation giant, is rolling out a smart panel called the Square D Energy Center this year. Span is not the only company making smart panels for homes, although it may have gotten the most publicity since it was founded in 2018 by its CEO, Arch Rao, who had headed Tesla’s energy storage business. The product is, of course, the smart panel and it was most recently in the news a few weeks ago when Green Mountain Power announced it had become the first utility in the country to offer the Span Smart Panel to its customers. But now, it also could be a discussion about yet another product that would seem to have a role to play in making buildings and the grid smarter.

Not so long ago, a smart panel discussion was a panel discussion featuring intelligent conversation.
